Please give us a brief introduction
Hello, I’m Shin Sung-il, the representative of Musma. I’m interested in new technology, and I like to make something new. I hope my temperament will keep workers safe and contribute to innovation in the industrial field.
What is the background of Musma’s birth?
There are two main reasons. First, I wanted to contribute to more people and society. I saw many workers die or get hurt while working at the shipyard. It turns out that Korea is the top industrial accident rate among OECD countries. I wanted to solve these problems with my ability. Also, I started my business with the idea of creating jobs and returning donations to society
Secondly, I wanted to show that a good company can succeed enough.
A good company here means an open culture that makes all employees happy.
Is that too cliché? To put it further, in a general organizational culture, top-down, military-style organizational culture is naturally accepted, because it is the fastest and most efficient one. This culture can be efficient right now, but I think that the totalitarianism of organization constrains individuals and their abilities and makes creative ideas or continuous innovation difficult to achieve. Breaking away from rigid ways, I started this business with the desire to create a company that respects each other and takes pride in its work with a horizontal and open culture.
What is the most important value as a representative?
It’s autonomy, responsibility, and mutual respect. I think these values are the basis for open culture and horizontal culture. I think increasing employee participation through autonomous atmosphere also increases the activeness and creativity to solve problems.
However, it should be accompanied by appropriate discipline and responsibility. Think of a self-driving car. Drivers of self-driving cars have the freedom not to drive, but they should be responsible for following traffic regulations to coexist with others. A company is, after all, a group of individuals. I think that we can create a harmonious relationship with our members and a healthy organizational culture only when we respect individual freedom and autonomy but have clear discipline and responsibility within the organization. So, I am constantly trying to balance autonomy and responsibility by sharing my thoughts with the employees.
Next, mutual respect is necessary to make our organizational culture more humane and warmer. If I emphasize autonomy and responsibility to our employees, it can turn into individualism and create a cold culture that is not interested in each other. We were all forced to spend most of the day in a company space, and I hoped we wouldn’t hurt each other emotionally. If you think about the value of mutual respect one more time, you’ll be careful with every action and every word you speak. I think this value alone can create a warm culture for each other.
Lastly, what does Musma look like in the future?
First, under the slogan Site Digitalization by IoT, it is to innovate the industrial site through ICT technology. And all of this should be towards people, people-first and people-oriented. I want to make a more efficient and safer site and become a unicorn company with global competitiveness within 5 years.
Second, I will make a company where employees are happy. How can I satisfy my customers and give them value when my family is unhappy? think that employees can provide good service if they work happily. I try to remember that employee value is as important as customer value. Musma is just beginning to walk, but it’s also a fast-growing company. It is important to achieve big goals and grow, but I think the process is also important. I want to spend my journey happily with the Musma people.
